Who can e-prescribe?
Various registered healthcare professionals can e-prescribe and use SmartRx. Independent prescribers have the authority to prescribe medications, licensed or unlicensed, in the UK within their professional competence and following accepted clinical practices. According to the Medicines Act, certain professionals trained as independent prescribers and registered with their respective regulators can prescribe:
- Doctors registered with the GMC
- Dentists registered with the GDC
- Nurses registered with the NMC
- Midwives registered with the NMC
- Pharmacists registered with the GPhC
- Podiatrists registered with the HCPC
- Paramedics registered with the HCPC
- Optometrists registered with the HCPC (Optometrist Independent Prescribers can prescribe any licensed medicine for ocular conditions affecting the eye and the tissues surrounding the eye, except Controlled Drugs or medicines for parenteral administration.)
- Therapeutic radiographers registered with the HCPC
